Not long ago, several coal mining communities thrived on the floodplain of the Purgatoire River. Frequent flooding of this dynamic river threatened these communities and eventually led to the construction of Trinidad Reservoir. In turn, residents of Sopris and neighboring communities were forcibly relocated and their homes were buried beneath the rising water.
